This item was sold at the Battleship Regatta Auction hosted by the Houston Yacht Club.
My original intention was to mill the deck wood into 3/4” clean pieces, but as I was milling I liked the look of the lightly planed paint side. I decided to embrace that, and to incorporate the bolt holes and plugs into the design. It was a little more rustic than my usual work as a result, and the bolt hole rot required some stabilization and workarounds. I added a few brass accents in the bolt holes with hand engraved Easter eggs. The lining is solid Spanish Cedar about 1/4” thick—no veneer here. The top is actually 3 layers; the original glue up cupped badly, so I resawed it, flattened the layers, and reglued them together with the grain going in opposite directions like plywood. It’ll stay nice and flat! The bottom has an 1/8” layer of deck wood on the outside to match the rest of the box, and to keep the lining untouched by the finish. Finish is shellac. I didn’t fill it up, but it should hold 8-12 cigars, depending on the size.
