This item was sold in our Independence Day online auction.
For this one I went with a San Mai construction forge welding two layers of ship steel with a core of 80Crv2.. The blade profile and bevels were ground in and the keyhole for handle machined. Then the painstaking process of cutting and fitting the wood to match the keyhole relief in the metal. This was nothing more than tedious scraping away wood and checking for fit, rinse lather and repeat. I actually went through several blocks due to chipping and breaking of little pieces. The handle is actually two pieces each fit from either side then held together with epoxy and hidden pins. This way the original deck finish could be visible on both sides. The curved pommel and nut are both made from ship steel and the brass wedge is from the ship. All the steel is hand sanded finish with an acid etch to bring out the character in the hull steel.
